As part of their ongoing commitment to community engagement across various sectors, Chelmsford City Racecourse are hosting a Remembrance Raceday on Saturday 9th November offering complimentary tickets to all serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces.
This unique raceday experience combining military entertainment with thrilling horseracing is dedicated to honouring those who gave their lives, and to pay tribute to all serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces. All profit from additional ticket sales will be donated to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
The day will open with a moving wreath laying ceremony, inviting all visitors to participate in a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Led by key military figures the Lord Lieutenant of Essex and the Mayor of Chelmsford, this is an opportunity for everyone to come together for a moment of silence and reflection during this commemorative and poignant event.
Following the ceremony majestic horses and skilled jockeys will take to the track competing in adrenaline-fueled races, showcasing speed skill and determination. As a family friendly venue Chelmsford City Racecourse also offers an exciting experience for children, who love watching the horses and cheering them on towards the finishing line. It's a fantastic day that combines entertainment with education, making it fun for all ages!
On the first Remembrance day at the racecourse in 2023 serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces gathered to pay tribute and honour the heroes of the past. They were joined by families, Legions from afar, a visitor all the way from Ireland, and even had a service dog in attendance. Feedback was so positive this is set to be an annual legacy event. Take a look back at last year’s Remembrance Raceday 2023.
With the help of sponsorship from generous local businesses military entertainment catered for all the family which included a Military Band, The Wimbish Military Wives Choir, A bugler, and the fantastic Twirlers from the Twirling Union.
Also working in partnership with The Royal British Legion which offers financial, social and emotional support to their members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependents, the racecourse are proud to have raised an impressive £5000 for the Poppy Appeal in 2023, and will once again make a donation in 2024.
Jo Flaherty, Head of Community & Charity at Chelmsford City Racecourse said “At the racecourse we recognise the importance of supporting our Armed Forces, and regularly contribute to the Tickets for Troops scheme, Blue Light tickets, and volunteering for charities that help our heroes. We are incredibly proud not only to have raised a significant amount for the RBL on 11th November 2023, but also to have raised £8447 for Blesma the limbless veterans charity since August 2023.
"We are looking forward to another memorable day on Saturday 9th November, welcoming and paying tribute to serving members and veterans of the Armed Forces, uniting them with each other and regular racegoers from the wider community”.
