Martin Beable is to join Greater Anglia (GA) as its new Managing Director from Monday, 7 October.
Martin returns to GA from Transport UK, where he has been the New Trains and Fleet Director since October 2023. He previously spent nearly five years as GA's Engineering Director, where he helped to oversee the full fleet replacement programme and boost GA’s performance. He also led the upgrades for key train maintenance depots at Ilford and Norwich Crown Point and secured excellent commercial relationships with suppliers.
All these initiatives contributed to the smooth introduction of a complete fleet of new trains and the industry-leading performance that GA has achieved in recent years.
Commenting on his return to GA as MD, Martin Beable said: “I am delighted to be returning to Greater Anglia as its new Managing Director. With new trains right across our network and industry-leading punctuality, we are well placed to keep on improving rail services for customers and communities throughout our region.
"Everyone at GA is committed to delivering the best possible service, day in, day out, and I am passionate about the role the railway plays in ensuring East Anglia is a successful and sustainable place to live and work.”
During the last ten years, Greater Anglia has been through a major transformation programme, which has resulted in the company becoming the best train operator in the UK. GA has introduced new trains on all its routes and services in one of the largest train replacement projects of the last 30 years and has delivered the highest punctuality levels on the entire UK network since April 2023. It has also been one of the best performers on the network since April 2020 and delivered wider improvements to stations, ticketing, journey times, timetables, and customer satisfaction, as well as a strong recovery in passenger numbers.
Martin succeeds Jamie Burles, who is now bound in due course for a new role at Network Rail's Eastern Region.
Jamie Burles said: “I am proud to have been part of a great team at Greater Anglia which has delivered a transformation in train services in our region over the past decade. We made a commitment to a positive step change in service quality, with new trains and better performance, and we have fulfilled that pledge.
"I am sure Martin Beable will maintain that cycle of continuous improvement, to provide even better services for passengers.
"I’d like to thank everyone at Greater Anglia and all the partners and stakeholders who I’ve worked with, who have helped us make GA a top performing train company."
