The Five Estuaries Offshore Windfarm application reached a major milestone. On 22 April, the Planning Inspectorate formally accepted the application for examination.

Five Estuaries is a proposed extension to the existing Galloper Offshore Wind Farm. The new wind farm will include 79 turbines which will come ashore at Sandy Point between Frinton-on-Sea and Holland-on-Sea in Tendring Essex. The underground cables will then travel approximately 22km to a new substation located to the west of Little Bromley.

The project has been developed by RWE, on behalf of the partners (RWE, a Macquarie-led consortium, ESB and Sumitomo Corporation). It is now moving into the pre-examination phase of the consenting process, with the examination phase expected to begin later in the summer and last six months.

This is an important project which will play a vital role in supporting the UK and our county in achieving our net zero targets. Offshore wind is also one of the fastest growing industries in the economy. As well as helping the environment, the project will lead to a host of further benefits to our county including providing new jobs, skills and supply chain opportunities as we embrace the opportunities which a future net zero economy will bring.    

RWE has worked closely with local communities and other consultees during the development process of the project over the last four years. They have submitted proposals which provide the best possible outcomes whilst minimising the impact to local communities, wildlife and the environment.
