“Nothing” I hear you shout, as most small businesses don’t use then because they believe it will just cost them money.
If you want to build an extension on your house, you will most likely employ the services of an architect and builder, and happily, (well maybe not happily) pay his fees.
Building a business is the same, there are key times in the development of a business that you will need an expert. Without the architect your extension would not pass planning permission, without the right expert intervention your business may not grow at the rate you want or worse still – well let’s not go there!
Upon setting up MKR Solutions Ltd I realised I needed added expertise to support my business and my client’s business.
Whilst my expertise lies in the financial services sector managing large client portfolios and building business, my manufacturing knowledge was limited and my HR knowledge likewise.
I decided to look for a solution and found IBD (Initiatives in Business Development) – founded in 2002 with the aim of bringing quality consultancy to the SME market at prices they could afford.
As an accredited member I now have access to nearly 200 experts with knowledge covering pretty much every business requirement and as such I can now help with all my client needs. Incidentally I also have a mentor in IBD – no matter how good we are a mentor can be invaluable just to act as a checker or someone to bounce ideas off.
I took time to research the organisation I needed to help me and the one I felt I could work collaboratively with most effectively. I also spent some money – but always with the ROI in mind and I am glad to say it has been rewarding both for me and my clients.
The moral of the story is clear.
None of us are experts in everything, be good at what we do but to build a solid foundation, utilise others who can help when expertise is required and can often see the wood that you can’t see because of all the trees in the way !
