The People’s Award for the ‘Best Natural Burial Ground in the East of England for 2019/20’ and the Overall Winner for the ‘Best Natural Burial Ground of Britain for 2019/20’ awarded by The National Death Centre.
Old Park Meadow opened in September 2017 and has a beautiful building where services and wakes can be held for anyone from anywhere, whether they are religious or not, would prefer a burial or ash interment, a service or a wake afterwards, Old Park Meadow is able to accommodate most requests.
Working closely with the Essex Wildlife Trust and the Woodland Trust, flower meadows and a young bluebell wood are growing and creating beautiful spaces for burials and ash interments yet at the same time ensuring a safe space for nature. Over the summer the meadows have been humming with the different sounds of the insects, butterflies, dragonflies and bees. Skylarks have been nesting and Little Owls, Barn Owls, Red Kites and Yellow Wagtails have been spotted, to name just a few of the many birds that come to visit.
These Awards are different to any other kind of assessment of green cemeteries, they are not about how sustainable each site is, the facilities that are available or the way the land is managed; the People's Awards are all about the people involved, the level of service they provide, the personal touches and the impact that each natural burial ground manager has made on the families of those who they have helped to bury.
Delyse Jackaman, Manager said “The Award reflects the hard work, commitment and caring attitude of the team here. It is a privilege to be able to help people at such a difficult time in their lives and this is why these Awards mean so much to us”.
