Longer nights create greater opportunities for burglars roaming in the dark!
That’s why October has been designated Home Security Month - to remind us how we can defend our homes against criminals as we transition into Winter.
To support the cause, Blake’s have compiled the following top tips to keep local homeowners safe this Autumn.
Blake’s Top 6 Autumn Home Security Tips
1.) Keep it Bright!
It’s a burglar’s worst fear – an occupied home! When you are out, leave a light on or use a timer so lights go on and off randomly. A static light in the front room with no noise from the TV or household conversations won't fool a burglar. Instead, the timers create the illusion of people being home and using multiple rooms!
2.) Close the curtains and blinds
With lights illuminating the inside of your home, close the blinds and curtains to keep the contents of your home safely hidden. Closing blinds and curtains also makes it harder for a burglar to determine whether the coast is clear. If in doubt, he will avoid your home.
3.) Lock your windows and doors
Ensure all your windows & doors are locked. Keep in mind that if you have uPVC doors, you need to hold the handle upwards while turning the key for the door to lock properly! Burglars are aware of this issue and will seek out homes with uPVC doors. Make sure yours is properly locked!
Get in the Halloween spirit and deck out your home! This is especially important if you are going away in October during the half term. Decorating the outside your home with Halloween items makes the house seem “lived in”. You could also leave a bowl of sweets on the doorstep, so trick-or-treaters don’t knock at your empty home.
As an extra precaution, ask a neighbour to collect your post for you. Piled up letters let a burglar know that the house is vacant.
5.) Utilise Nature – Autumn Leaves
All those fallen leaves on the drive may seem like a pain, but they can serve to your advantage. Place bundles of fallen leaves around entrances to your home. If they are stepped on, the signature crunch sound will alert you to any unwanted presences. Burglars need to be stealthy to succeed so will avoid approaching homes with Autumn leaves lying around.
No trees around? The same effect can be achieved with loose gravel or stone.
6.) Install a home alarm
Halloween aside, the best way to defend your home all year round is with a professionally installed home alarm system. Professional burglars can identify cheap or fake alarm boxes, but they know a quality system is not to be messed with!
Make their “job” difficult and defend your home with ease.
